Queen Alexandra (1844 -1925) was Queen Mother during the First World War. A Danish princess, she had married the futureEdward VII in 1863 and was Queen Consort from 1901 until his death in 1910 when their son, George V, became king. Alexandra, perhaps bestknown for founding Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps, was the patron of many charities during the war. These included AlexandraDay, an annual event when roses were sold to raise money for hospitals and charities. It was first held in 1912 to mark the 50thanniversary of Alexandra's arrival from Denmark and continues to this day.
